Warframe Leaps to Tau System: A New Cosmic Frontier
12 Jul
Summary
- Warframe players will soon explore the new Tau solar system.
- The Origin System will remain accessible with ongoing stories.
- Nightwave battle passes will feature new narrative experiences.

Digital Extremes is ushering in a new era for Warframe, moving beyond its established time-travel narratives to explore the Tau solar system. This significant expansion, revealed at TennoCon 2026, will allow players to access multiple new celestial bodies within Tau for regular gameplay. First launched in 2013, Warframe has continuously evolved, incorporating diverse gameplay elements beyond its initial looter-shooter roots.
The introduction of the Tau system is a monumental shift, akin to Destiny's "The Final Shape" expansion, which transported players to an alien locale. For over 13 years, Warframe's gameplay has been confined to the Origin System, a map mirroring our own solar system. The upcoming Tau expansion will feature the Fornax region and potentially another secret area upon its launch later in 2026, with further celestial bodies to be explored in subsequent updates.
Developers have assured players that the existing Origin System will not be abandoned. Stories and content for the Origin System are planned, with new quests and a new ice-themed Warframe arriving this fall via the Iceblade of Narin update. Digital Extremes is also enhancing tutorials to make the game more accessible for new and returning players.
Furthermore, Warframe's free Nightwave battle passes are being revamped. The next pass, Amir's Shockwave, will focus on narrative progression, unfolding a tabletop RPG-style adventure of Amir Beckett's "Fables & Frontiers." This episodic approach aims to integrate lighter, character-focused stories into Warframe's universe, complementing the main narrative.
