Walk My World, a groundbreaking immersive theatre production, redefines spectacle within a vast 6,000 sq metre warehouse. This European-largest immersive show features 40 distinct performing spaces across multiple levels, creating a steampunk dystopia where audiences navigate freely. Performers engage in modern circus, dance, and cabaret, with some soaring high above as spectators explore intricate sets inspired by ancient tales.
The production, led by Hungarian director Bence Vági, is based on Virgil's Aeneid, focusing on the story of Dido and Aeneas. However, it weaves in numerous other characters and narratives, presented by 26 individual performers. Audiences are encouraged to wander, stumbling upon diverse scenes ranging from solo aerial performances to ensemble pieces, with some lasting minutes and others over half an hour.
Vági, founder of the contemporary circus company Recirquel, has crafted a unique fusion he calls 'cirque danse.' This blend combines the superhuman feats of circus with the expressive freedom of dance, allowing for profound storytelling. Despite concerns about artistic freedom in Hungary, Vági asserts complete creative control, evidenced by productions that have explored sensitive themes and cultural narratives.
The complexity of Walk My World lies in its synchronized execution. Performers, guided by smartwatches, adhere to precise schedules across the expansive venue. The show culminates in an exhilarating finale featuring high-flying acrobatics from a Russian swing, followed by a poignant aerial dance depicting Dido and Aeneas's tragic end, leaving audiences captivated.
