Cinema CEO Blasts Netflix's Theatrical Release Strategy
20 Feb
Summary
- Vue CEO criticizes Netflix's minimal theatrical releases.
- Industry veterans support Paramount in Warner Bros. Discovery bid.
- Vue invests heavily in cinema upgrades like recliner seats.

Tim Richards, CEO of Vue International and former Chair of the British Film Institute, voiced strong criticism regarding Netflix's theatrical release strategies. He argued that minimal, short-lived releases prevent most audiences from experiencing films like "All Quiet on the Western Front" or "Frankenstein" on the big screen.
Richards contrasted Netflix's approach with that of David Ellison, whose 15-year production track record he trusts more for supporting the industry's future. The cinema executive also indicated widespread industry support for Paramount's bid for Warner Bros. Discovery.
Vue International is actively enhancing the cinema-going experience, with nearly 40,000 luxury recliner seats installed and a new self-service "Vue Your Way" system aiming to eliminate queues. Richards believes these innovations, alongside a strong slate of films from studios like Paramount and Amazon MGM, will drive a robust box office in 2026.
He also noted the resurgence of local film production across Europe, with domestic films frequently appearing in the top five releases in many territories. Richards expressed optimism for the industry's rebound, anticipating a significantly different and positive narrative following the summer of 2026, pending resolution of the Warner Bros. deal.
