The animated feature 'The Violinist,' a hand-drawn production from Singapore, has achieved a significant milestone by winning the Cristal Award for Best Film at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. This marks the first Singaporean feature film to be selected for competition and subsequently win the festival's highest honor.
The film, directed by Ervin Han and Raúl García, is a period drama that chronicles the history of Singapore and Malaya from 1929 to the present. It centers on two gifted childhood friends who are also violinists, whose lives are profoundly impacted by the ravages of war and the Japanese occupation.
In other awards, the Jury Award and Audience Prize went to 'Iron Boy,' the debut feature from French animator Louis Clichy. 'Blaise,' an off-beat dramedy from French directors Dimitri Planchon and Jean-Paul Guigue, secured the Grand Prix for Best Film in the Contrechamp sidebar section.
The festival also presented awards for television production, with 'The Great Dreamscape' receiving the Cristal Award for best television production. 'Takopi's Original Sin' from Japan earned the Jury Award for best series, while the French hand-drawn series 'The Broos' took home the audience award for TV production. The ceremony concluded with a tribute to Mexican illustrator and animator Luis de la Rosa, who tragically passed away earlier in the week in Annecy.
