- Her art for the utility box features her as a dermatologist.
Twelve-year-old Olivia Saavedra is emerging as a notable talent within the High Desert art community in Victorville. She has been selected to feature her artwork on a city utility box, an honor shared by only three other middle school students. This public art display is the latest in a series of artistic achievements for Saavedra, who has been passionate about art since age four.
Inspired by her great-grandmother and mother, Saavedra's artistic journey began during her early home-schooled years. At ten, she painted a mural in Apple Valley, and at eleven, a painting of hers was exhibited at the San Bernardino County Museum. Her recent utility box art, themed "future careers," depicts her as a dermatologist.
This selection marks the first year the Victorville utility box art contest included school children. Saavedra was chosen from numerous semi-finalists across 17 schools. Despite her artistic success, Saavedra's primary ambition is to enter the medical field, specifically dermatology, motivated by her grandfather's past skin conditions.
Her winning artwork prominently features her as a dermatologist, surrounded by community landmarks and symbols, reflecting her upbringing and aspirations. This initiative highlights the city's engagement with its youth and provides a platform for young talents like Saavedra.
