Victorian Pool Reopens After Covid Closure
6 Jul
Summary
- Chester's Victorian Pacific Pool reopens this autumn after pandemic closure.
- A significant donation from Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation made it possible.
- Repairs to Victorian tiles and financial viability were key concerns.

Chester City Baths, one of the UK's oldest Victorian swimming venues, is preparing to reopen its Pacific Pool this autumn. The pool was initially drained during the Covid-19 pandemic, which unfortunately led to damage to its original Victorian tiles.
While the Atlantic Pool at the baths was able to resume operations, the Pacific Pool remained closed for essential repairs and to ensure its financial viability amidst rising running costs. The restoration project has now concluded, with work underway to grout and deep clean the pool before refilling.
Generations of Chester residents have learned to swim in the baths, fostering a deep sense of community ownership. The crucial funding for the Pacific Pool's reopening came from a substantial, undisclosed donation by the Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation. This support underwrites nine months of operating costs, including utilities and staffing.
The reopening will facilitate an expansion of swimming lessons, classes, and club activities. The baths, which opened in 1901, have a rich history of serving the community, from teaching swimmers to hosting competitive events.
