Beloved Actor 'Chaams' Officially Changes Name to Iconic Character 'Java Sundaresan'

As of October 2, 2025, veteran Tamil actor Swaminathan, who was popularly known by his stage name 'Chaams', has officially changed his name to 'Java Sundaresan'. This decision comes after the actor's fans widely recognized him by the name of his iconic character from the 2008 film 'Arai En 305-il Kadavul'.

In a video shared on his Facebook handle last month, Chaams explained his reasoning behind the name change. He stated that although he had acted in numerous films under the name 'Chaams', his fans had come to identify him more with the character of 'Java Sundaresan' that he portrayed in the Chimbudevan-directed movie. Chaams said that wherever he went, people would greet him as 'Java Sundaresan', and the character's popularity had only increased over the years through various memes and fan references.

Acknowledging the will of the majority, the actor has now legally changed his name to 'Java Sundaresan'. He expressed his gratitude to director Chimbu Devan for giving him the opportunity to play the memorable character, as well as to producer Shankar for supporting the film. Chaams, who has had a 20-year-long career in the Tamil film industry, is known for his comedy roles and supporting performances in several notable films.
