Veteran Filmmaker Revitalizes Prestigious Torino Film Festival

In 2025, veteran filmmaker Giulio Base has returned to the Torino Film Festival as its artistic director, 41 years after first attending the event in 1982. Base, who has built a successful career both in front of and behind the camera, is now tasked with leading the prestigious, auteur-driven festival.

Base's goal is to preserve the festival's core identity while adding a new dimension of popularity and glamour. He wants to appeal not only to cinephiles and students but also to those who might not usually attend festivals. To achieve this, Base has appointed six new members under the age of 30 to the selection committee, bringing a fresh perspective to the festival's programming.

"Let's be honest," Base says with a laugh. "Italy can be a country of old men. I wanted a fresh perspective. Their vision and their approach to cinema helped shape a competition that remains true to the festival's founding spirit: youthful, daring, and determined to change the world, or at least change cinema."

As Base enters his second year as the festival's artistic director, he has focused on clarity and curation, creating a manageable and memorable event. The program features three main competitions: features, documentaries, and shorts, each presenting 16 titles, ensuring a balanced and easy-to-navigate experience for attendees.
