The Visual Effects Society (VES) has announced key updates for its 2027 VES Awards, set to take place on February 17 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Nominations for the 25th annual awards will be revealed on January 19.
The society is introducing a new award for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Short Project, encompassing various short-form content up to 45 minutes. Previously merged categories for CG Cinematography have been separated into distinct awards for Photoreal and Animated projects.
Further enhancements include updating animated categories to accommodate episodic projects like toon series, a change from the previous 'Animated Feature' designation. The Simulation categories have been renamed Procedural Effects to better encompass diverse system-driven artistry.
Eligibility for the 25th VES Awards requires projects to have been released in calendar year 2026, with submissions open from September 15 to October 31. These category revisions reflect the expanding diversity of visual effects work.
