Verity's Unsettling Home: A Real-Life Mystery

The striking property central to the film 'Verity,' perceived as a secluded Vermont home, is actually Beckoning Path, a midcentury-modern residence located in Armonk, New York. Designed in the 1960s by Danish designer Jens Quistgaard, the home's distinctive architecture, featuring extensive glazing and dramatic rooflines, was crucial in establishing the film's uneasy visual identity.

The filmmakers sought an unusual silhouette, and Beckoning Path's angular shapes and natural lakeside setting provided the perfect backdrop for the fictional Crawford estate. While the existing structure offered a foundation, the interiors underwent significant transformation. Production designer Amy Williams and her team introduced angular furniture and polished materials to cultivate a sophisticated yet unsettling atmosphere, avoiding traditional horror tropes.

To achieve specific scenes, including Verity's office and bedrooms, parts of the house were recreated at Broadway Stages in Queens. These constructed sets meticulously mimicked the architectural language of Beckoning Path, allowing for larger, controlled spaces. Director Michael Showalter confirmed that while upstairs elements like the kitchen and lake views were filmed on location, other areas were built on soundstages to maintain the film's visual narrative.

Today, Beckoning Path operates as a private wellness retreat, offering a serene contrast to the psychological turmoil depicted in 'Verity.' The filmmakers leveraged the real house's inherent character and expanded upon its visual language through deliberate production design and set construction. This resulted in a residence that appears alluring yet becomes increasingly disquieting as the film's secrets unfold.
