Mother's Toxic Love Burns Deep in Venice Film

Edoardo De Angelis' new film, "The Fire Within You," is set to compete at the Venice Film Festival following RAI Cinema's acquisition of world rights. This dark tragicomedy, inspired by Antonio Franchini's autobiographical book, centers on the intense and destructive influence of a Neapolitan mother on her son. The narrative unfolds during a Christmas gathering, transforming into an emotional crucible where years of misunderstandings and resentments come to the fore.

The film depicts a fierce confrontation between mother and son, interwoven with darkly comic elements and the anticipation of change. Director De Angelis, known for his previous Venice entries "Indivisible" and "Comandante," describes the mother figure, Angela, as a complex matriarchal force, embodying a potent mix of charisma and severity, characteristic of the society he grew up in.

Working with actress Vanessa Scalera, who portrays Angela, was a deeply rewarding experience for De Angelis. He sought to capture the character's raw passion, comparing it to driving a car too fast, where the intensity propels one forward until an inevitable consequence. Scalera's performance is noted for its depth, possibly drawing from personal connections to the character's complexities.

"The Fire Within You" is a production of Picomedia, an Asacha Media Group Company, in partnership with Fremantle and RAI Cinema. The film's premiere at Venice marks De Angelis' return to the Lido with a more personal and character-driven story.
