Filmmaker Varma: Bollywood's Only God is Cash

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has responded to composer AR Rahman's recent remarks about potential communal bias within the Hindi film industry. Varma asserted that the industry's primary focus is financial gain, stating, "The film industry is only about making money." He believes that commercial viability and the potential for blockbusters are the sole determinants of talent acquisition.

Varma elaborated that factors such as caste or religion are secondary to an artist's ability to deliver box office success. He cited the example of singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, whose opportunities in Hindi cinema increased after hit songs, and diminished when his subsequent songs did not perform as well.

While Varma acknowledged that he could not speak to Rahman's specific personal experiences, he maintained his general view on the industry's commercial orientation. Singer Sona Mohapatra also weighed in, disagreeing with Rahman's perspective. Mohapatra pointed out Rahman's ongoing involvement in significant projects like 'Chhaava' and 'Ramayana' as proof that he is not marginalized.
