Director Gifts 'Varanasi' Title to Rajamouli's Next

A title dispute for SS Rajamouli's upcoming film, co-starring Mahesh Babu, has been amicably resolved. The film, reportedly titled 'Varanasi,' faced a challenge as director Subba Reddy had already registered the name with the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce. However, Reddy has now officially relinquished the title rights to producer KL Narayana, choosing not to accept any payment.
Subba Reddy explained that he registered 'Varanasi' in 2023 and had begun developing a story. Upon learning of Rajamouli's interest, he felt honored to give up the title for what he described as a landmark project. He emphasized that titles are emotions, not commodities to be sold.
This gesture was facilitated after former Directors' Association president Veera Shankar explained the importance of the title for Rajamouli and Narayana's film. The project features Mahesh Babu as Rudra, opposing Prithviraj Sukumaran's antagonist Kumbha. Priyanka Chopra is also set to appear in the film, marking her anticipated return to Indian cinema. 'Varanasi' is scheduled for release on August 7, 2027.
