5 Mar
Summary
- Bertinelli wishes she had more compassion for Ed's struggles.
- She regrets not being a better friend to him post-divorce.
- Their son Wolfgang is the only lasting positive from the marriage.

Valerie Bertinelli recently spoke with Sophia Bush on her podcast, "Work in Progress With Sophia Bush," about her past marriage to rocker Eddie Van Halen. Bertinelli expressed a deep wish that she had understood more about trauma and addiction during their time together.
She stated that while she doesn't view their marriage as a failure, she regrets not being able to be a better friend to Eddie after their divorce. Bertinelli noted that knowing what she knows now about trauma's impact, she would have approached his struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction with more compassion.
Bertinelli and Van Halen were married from 1981 until their divorce was finalized in 2007. They share a son, Wolfgang Van Halen, born in 1991. Eddie Van Halen candidly discussed his heavy substance use, which he stated was tied to his rock star lifestyle, until he achieved sobriety in 2008.
Looking back, Bertinelli emphasized her gratitude for their final year together but expressed frustration at wishing she had acquired her current knowledge sooner. She concluded that while she loves her ex-husband, she does not consider him her soulmate, identifying their son Wolfgang as the most significant outcome of their union.
