Veteran Chilean filmmaker Valeria Sarmiento is set to release her final directorial work, "Behind the Rain," premiering in the Crystal Globe Competition at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival this month. The film centers on Sofia, a psychology professor whose return to her hometown after postgraduate studies coincides with the discovery of a girl's body. This event triggers painful memories and a journey of self-reflection for Sofia.
Sarmiento drew inspiration from personal childhood experiences shared with producer Chamila Rodríguez. Initially conceived years ago, the project found its footing in Chile. Rodríguez emphasized the deeply personal nature of the film, noting that its themes resonate with experiences often silenced by patriarchal societies. Sarmiento chose to film in monochrome, likening the past to black and white, and the title "Behind the Rain" reflects her mother's advice to observe details closely.
The film masterfully blends genres, including elements of detective and noir films, though Sarmiento clarifies it is not a police procedural. Securing funding proved challenging due to the film's ambitious scope and sensitive subject matter. Rodríguez also pointed to the broader funding struggles within Chile's vibrant but resource-limited film industry, stressing the importance of state support for arts and culture.
Following this directorial farewell, Sarmiento and Rodríguez will focus on restoring the works of the late Raúl Ruiz, beginning with "La Colonia Penal" for a planned 2026 premiere.
