A new competition category for individuals with additional learning needs (ALN) is making its debut at this year's Urdd Eisteddfod, held on Anglesey. This marks a significant step in inclusivity for the annual festival. Sion Davies, a 20-year-old from Carmarthenshire who has Down's syndrome, will be among the first to compete in the individual performance section for those under 25.
Sion, who has danced since childhood with his local Urdd branch, Aelwyd Cynwyl Elfed, will perform a clog dance. This individual competition is a highlight of the expanded seven-day festival, providing a unique opportunity for participants to showcase their skills. His father, Arwel, expressed immense pride, stating it's a moment they've long anticipated.
Leaders from Sion's Aelwyd highlighted his passion for performing and how he energizes the group. They emphasized the importance of such opportunities for individuals who might otherwise be overlooked. Sion will also participate in a group dance, demonstrating the inclusive spirit of his Urdd branch, where his friends and younger sister are also members.
