Universal's Musk Doc: Legal Review Sparks Release Fears

Universal Pictures has denied any intention to abandon Alex Gibney's documentary on Elon Musk, contrary to earlier reports. While the film is set for a US theatrical release via Bleecker Street in the coming weeks, international distribution details were initially unclear, causing filmmaker concern.

Sources indicate Universal conducted an internal legal review of the documentary after receiving the final cut shortly before its Venice Film Festival premiere. This review was reportedly heightened by a legal complaint from Elon Musk's lawyers sent to Gibney's production company and mentioned distributors.

Despite the studio's logo not appearing before the Venice debut and a light-touch approach to international press, Universal did not block festival screenings. The studio's actions suggest a process to assess potential legal challenges rather than an outright rejection of the film.

The documentary is now slated for a Q1 2027 release, with a similar stateside streaming release expected on HBO around the same time. Home entertainment plans, including potential distribution on platforms like Sky in the UK, will also be closely watched.
