Real Voices Shine in 'Union County' Recovery Film

The film "Union County" offers a distinctive perspective on the opioid crisis by centering its narrative on the real experiences of individuals within a court-ordered drug rehabilitation program in rural Ohio. Writer-director Adam Meeks collaborated closely with the local recovery community, incorporating many non-professional actors who are actual participants in the program. This approach, Meeks explained, allowed for a more intimate and honest storytelling experience.

Will Poulter, portraying Cody Parsons, praised the film's respectful and responsible creation process, noting the trust extended by the community. His co-star Noah Centineo also features in the drama. Annette Deao, a therapist deeply involved in Ohio's recovery efforts for over two decades, plays a significant role, with her part expanded in the feature film from her initial appearance in Meeks' short film.

Meeks discussed his interest in blurring lines between fiction and nonfiction, stating that fictionalizing the core narrative allowed for deeper character portraits while observing difficult moments without imposing on those in recovery. The production team invested considerable time building relationships in Bellefontaine, Ohio, fostering trust and comfort among the residents, as noted by cinematographer Stefan Weinberger. Poulter also dedicated a year to immersing himself in the community to perfect his Midwestern accent and fortify on-screen trust.
