Unfamiliar, a German espionage thriller released on Netflix on February 5, 2026, centers on Meret and Simon, former BND agents attempting a normal life. Their past resurfaces when a deadly 16-year-old mission in Belarus comes back to haunt them, with their former nemesis, Josef Koleev, seeking revenge.
The disastrous mission involved trying to turn Josef into a double agent, but the informant, Katya, fell for him and became pregnant. Meret and Simon had saved Katya and her child, whom they adopted as Nina, lying about Katya's death. Josef discovers Katya and Gregor are alive, and that Nina is his daughter.
As Meret and Simon flee with Nina, they realize a mole within the BND, dubbed "Starfish," is feeding Josef their location. This mole is revealed to be Ben Krüger, the new BND chief, who frames and eliminates a colleague to maintain his cover.
Josef's fate is left ambiguous after his father-in-law orders his death. Meanwhile, Meret and Simon survive an attack but decide to separate due to years of secrets. Katya learns Nina is alive and makes a deal to exchange the couple's location for safe passage abroad with her daughter.
In the series finale, Meret and Simon are arrested by officers, including mole Ben, for the murder of Josef's hitman, Jonas. Simultaneously, Katya escapes with Nina, leaving the former agents to face consequences for a crime committed by Josef.
