Typically, the Diwali release calendar is dominated by the likes of Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Shah Rukh Khan, and Salman Khan, with last year's success of Kartik Aaryan's Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 further cementing the hold of big-budget Bollywood releases.
However, this year, the scale appears to be smaller for the new releases. Neither Thamma nor Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat are considered "event" films, but they are still vying for a share of the lucrative Diwali box office. While Thamma is the bigger production, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat has managed to secure good showcasing, despite the initial brouhaha surrounding its release.
On a regular Friday, the Milap Zaveri-directed romantic drama would have likely seen an opening day of around ₹5-6 crores. But thanks to its popular music and the hype generated by the Diwali clash, the film's advance bookings are heading towards a strong 35-40K sales. This is expected to translate into an opening day collection of approximately ₹8 crores, with the potential to even reach double digits.
