Disraeli Portrait Among 65 Artworks Missing in UK Parliament
24 Aug
Summary
- Over 65 artworks, including historical portraits, are missing from UK Parliament's collection.
- Parliamentary officials state the collection is working and items are frequently moved.
- No works have been permanently written off or are considered a financial loss.

A list of over 65 artworks from the UK's publicly owned parliamentary collection has gone missing since 2024. Among the misplaced items are a photograph of Benjamin Disraeli, an engraved portrait of William Wilberforce, and a satirical cartoon depicting the 1995 Conservative leadership battle. A parliamentary spokesperson noted that these works are part of a working collection, leading to frequent movement and subsequent rediscoveries.
Officials emphasize that none of the 65-plus items have been permanently written off, and they are not considered a financial loss. Indeed, five of the previously unlocated works have been found earlier in 2026. This situation is notably less severe than in 2018, when 224 works were reported missing.
The collection comprises 26,000 objects, including furniture and decorative arts. The current reported disappearances, while concerning, highlight the dynamic nature of managing a working collection, with ongoing audits aimed at reducing the number of items temporarily unaccounted for.
