16 Feb
Summary
- UK documentary filmmaking receives significant funding increase.
- Doc Society to distribute £7.2 million over three years.
- Funding aims to support emerging and established filmmakers.

The British Film Institute (BFI) announced a substantial increase in its support for U.K. documentary filmmaking on Monday. Through its National Lottery Funding plan for 2026-2029, the BFI has allocated £7.2 million ($9.8 million) to Doc Society, its U.K.-wide partner for distributing documentary funding. This represents a 20 percent rise in investment compared to the previous three-year period, reflecting a strong commitment to the sector.
The enhanced funding will facilitate an expansion of feature production and development finance. Doc Society will introduce a new immersive fund and a dedicated development fund for feature-length documentaries. Furthermore, production support will be amplified through two distinct funding strands, specifically targeting emerging directors and mid-career to established filmmakers, thereby addressing talent progression and career sustainability within the documentary landscape.
