A journalist has been named the 13th monarch of Uganda's Tooro Kingdom, concluding a succession dispute. Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a cousin to the late King Oyo Nyimba, assumed the royal name Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I. His ascension followed the death of King Oyo last month. Traditional ceremonies marked the coronation in Fort Portal, including symbolic rituals like the slaughter of a bull.
The selection of Nyabongo I, who previously worked as a news anchor, was contentious. Objections were raised by Best Kemigisa, the late king's mother, and Princess Ruth Komuntale. They assert that the late king designated a young son as his heir through a will, a claim whose validity is debated.
Uganda operates as a constitutional republic, but traditional kingdoms like Tooro retain significant symbolic importance for cultural identity. The royal Babiito clan's 21-member committee chose Kijanangoma as the successor, navigating the challenges presented by the disputed lineage and ongoing community disquiet.
