An exhibition at Colchester Library features unique portraits of 50 famous authors, all meticulously crafted using only a typewriter. The artist, James Cook, a 29-year-old from Braintree, Essex, turned his teenage hobby into a profession after achieving widespread social media acclaim.
Cook's latest exhibition, which took three years to complete, interweaves hidden messages and facts into the artwork. For instance, Stephen King's portrait includes the detail '2,000 words every working day,' referencing his renowned work ethic. The free exhibition is open until November 3rd.
Cook's talent has attracted notable admirers, including actor Tom Hanks, who has collected typewriters since 1978, and Yeardley Smith, the voice of Lisa Simpson. Smith received a portrait incorporating musical notes typed from a special typewriter, reflecting Lisa's saxophone playing.
Further demonstrating his growing reputation, Cook was invited to Wimbledon in July to create a piece for the men's final. This complex work, involving animation frames, took six weeks to produce. He insists that the painstaking manual effort behind his art is precisely what captivates audiences.
Looking ahead, Cook is commissioned to create a large-scale depiction of the Rockefeller Ice Rink in New York City for its 90th birthday, utilizing an oversized typewriter. He has also been invited to create art of the Statue of Liberty.
