Hollywood Backslides: Quality Representation Declines
24 Mar
Summary
- High-end TV and Hollywood are reportedly regressing in representation quality.
- A rise in films focusing on women's mental health has been noted.
- Traditional gatekeepers and risk-averse commissioners are blamed for declining DEI.

Former Channel 4 drama boss Caroline Hollick has voiced concerns that Hollywood and high-end television are regressing in the quality of representation.
She noted an alarming trend of films focusing on women experiencing nervous breakdowns, emphasizing the need for vigilance in storytelling. Hollick also pointed to television shows where female characters are underdeveloped, citing an example with a prominent male lead and a passive female counterpart.
Hollick attributes this decline to a risk-averse environment where commissioners favor established, often white, middle-class, middle-aged male writers. She advocates for more opportunities for female creatives, suggesting a "female version of The Secret Agent" as an example.
While Hollick believes microdrama's negative stereotypes will evolve, unlike the early days of slasher horror, she highlights AI's potential to amplify existing biases. France's Adami CEO Elizabeth Le Hot warned that AI-driven content recycles past stereotypes without challenging them.
Producer Nadine Marsh-Edwards added that the industry should challenge inappropriate content and demand higher standards, encouraging broader storylines and audience engagement to shape future productions.
