Lesley Manville reprises her role as Susan Ryeland, a former book editor drawn into a murder investigation. Returning to England from Crete, Susan is enlisted to work on a new Atticus Pünd novel, a task that unexpectedly leads her into a complex family mystery. This situation once again requires her to utilize her detective skills beyond editorial duties.
Tim McMullan returns as the fictional detective Atticus Pünd, who is called to Corfu to investigate the murder of Lady Margaret Chalfont. The narrative weaves together real-world events with the fictional novel, with several cast members portraying characters in both storylines. Patricia Hodge plays Miriam Crace, a renowned children's author whose death becomes a key element of Susan's investigation, and also appears as Lady Margaret within the Pünd novel.
Supporting cast members also take on dual roles. Jamie Blackley portrays Eliot Crace, Miriam's grandson and an aspiring writer tasked with creating a new Atticus Pünd story, who suspects his grandmother was murdered. Mark Bonnar, Harry Lloyd, and Rupert Penry-Jones are among those playing characters in both the contemporary investigation and the fictional Pünd mystery, where Lady Margaret's second husband is a prime suspect. Amelia Bullmore and Danny Sapani also feature in significant supporting roles, with Claire Rushbrook returning as Susan's sister.
