Summary
- Turner's Rome painting, a personal favorite, returns after 200 years.
- The artwork is expected to fetch a record-breaking £50 million at auction.
- Its pristine condition, with visible artist's marks, adds to its value.
JMW Turner's masterpiece, 'Rome, From Mount Aventine,' is making a brief return to the city it depicts after almost 200 years. This painting, considered Turner's profound expression of affection for Rome, will be exhibited in the city before being shown in Hong Kong and New York.
The artwork is scheduled for auction in London on December 9th, with expectations set for a record-breaking sale of £50 million. This follows its 2014 sale to a private collector for £30.3 million, which was then an artist record.
Remarkably, the painting remains on its original canvas and frame, never having been relined or restored. This pristine condition allows for the visibility of Turner's palette knife marks and even fingerprints, highlighting its unique connection to the artist's creative process.
Previously owned by Hugh Munro and later by the 5th Earl of Rosebery, the painting has changed hands only twice. Its exhibition in Rome offers a rare opportunity to view this unique portrait of the city as it was during Turner's visits in the early 19th century.
