Tron: Ares Chases Slasher Hit's Success Despite Slow Start
15 Oct
Summary
- Tron: Ares opens slowly, trails 40-year-old original
- Aims to outperform modest $64.7M slasher reboot
- Worldwide box office reaches $63.58M after 4 days

As of October 15, 2025, the new Tron movie, Tron: Ares, has opened to a slow start at the box office. The film, starring Jared Leto, collected just $3.6 million on its first Monday in North America, a 54.3% drop from the previous day. Despite being a new release and having no other major competition in theaters, the collections for Tron: Ares are expected to remain underwhelming.
Interestingly, the film has already outgrossed the original Tron movie released over 40 years ago. The Tron franchise is widely popular, especially due to the success of the second film, Tron: Legacy. However, the latest installment is struggling to match that level of popularity.
On a positive note, Tron: Ares is now close to beating the recent slasher hit I Know What You Did Last Summer, which had a production cost of just $18 million and went on to collect $64.7 million worldwide. While the slasher reboot may have seemed like a flop, it actually became a box office success by exceeding its break-even target by 44%.
As Tron: Ares continues its run, it will be interesting to see if it can overcome its slow start and climb the ranks to become one of the top-grossing films of 2025.
