In a significant move, India's Toonz Media Group has boarded the production of the animated horror anthology film 'A Banquet for the Hungry Ghosts'. As of November 10th, 2025, the 90-minute film is being introduced for presales at the American Film Market (AFM) as a key part of Toonz's international slate.
The film is based on a book by Chinese-American author and chef Ying Chang Compestine and is being produced by Singapore's Robot Playground Media. Ervin Han, the co-founder of Robot Playground, is helming the project and leading a team of animators from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Taiwan.
The story follows four standalone but interlinked tales, each inspired by an iconic Chinese dish and tied together by a spectral chef who presides over a mysterious, otherworldly restaurant. Producers describe the film as blending "the macabre, the playful and the poetic" to deliver "a chilling cinematic experience that explores themes of human frailty and ancestral guilt and greed."
Toonz, the Indian animation powerhouse that celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, is known for producing over 10,000 minutes of 2D and CGI kids and family content annually. The studio has credits for Marvel's Wolverine and the X-Men and Speed Racer: The Next Generation, made in collaboration with Lionsgate.
