Tony Brown: A Voice for Black America Dies at 93

Tony Brown, the acclaimed host and producer of the long-running PBS program "Tony Brown's Journal," passed away at the age of 93. His influential show, which ran for nearly four decades until 2008, offered a vital space for in-depth discussions on politics, race, and culture, particularly for Black audiences.

Brown's career began in the late 1960s, offering a rare national platform for Black perspectives in post-Civil Rights America. His program featured over 1,000 guests, including prominent figures like Angela Davis, Rev. Jesse Jackson, President Ronald Reagan, Stevie Wonder, and Denzel Washington.

Known for his direct interviewing style, Brown never shied away from difficult topics. His show faced funding challenges in 1973 but garnered significant viewership, averaging five million viewers by September 1995. Colleagues remember him for his commitment to documenting Black America with intelligence and depth.

In addition to his broadcasting work, Brown made significant contributions to academia. He founded the School of Communications at Howard University in 1971 and later became the first dean of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University in 2004.

Brown also championed historically Black colleges and universities by founding Black College Day in 1980, an event that led to a congressional observance. His legacy extends to his mentorship of future journalists and his dedication to ensuring knowledge and important issues facing the Black community were accessible.
