- The game utilizes Unreal Engine 5 with custom-built technology.
- Lara Croft's braid physics demonstrate engine's custom capabilities.

Crystal Dynamics has detailed its approach to creating Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, confirming the game was built entirely from scratch using Unreal Engine 5.
Experience director Jeff Adams stated that no source code from the original 1996 Tomb Raider is available. This necessitated a complete reimagining rather than a direct remake, allowing the studio to leverage Unreal Engine 5's capabilities.
The team developed custom technology, including unique physics implementations, to ensure an authentic Tomb Raider experience on the modern engine. Adams highlighted Lara Croft's reactive braid as a prime example of these custom-built features.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for release on February 27, 2027, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
