Tom Vattakuzhy: Painting Stories, Inspiring Change

Indian contemporary artist Tom Vattakuzhy presents a compelling suite of works at the Kochi Muziris Biennale, each born from literary short stories. His artistic vision translates the essence of these narratives into striking visual compositions.

"Leninum Larshakanum" (2016) offers an enigmatic abstractionist landscape, a panoramic nocturnal scene rich with shadows, notable for a solitary banana leaf. Another piece, "The circular orb" (2015), features a luminous solar orb against a night sky, complemented by architectural vignettes and intimate window views hinting at human stories.

Vattakuzhy's repertoire extends to "Figurative fervour," exploring themes from destitution to solitary beauty. "Padhippinum arivinum oru masika," created for the 125th anniversary of literacy publications in Kerala, vividly illustrates historical moments. It highlights the paradoxes of everyday life, contrasting destitute children with societal structures and referencing efforts to foster literacy among marginalized communities, even depicting a king's gesture of blessing.

Further exploring profound concepts, "Oru brush Chitra varakunnu" challenges material reality by suggesting consciousness as the basis of existence. The evocative "Karpooramanam" (2016), inspired by T. Sreevalsan's work, captures elegiac themes of death and family, marked by figures with flowers in their hair.

Vattakuzhy views literature as his primary inspiration, viewing painting as a transformative act that moves beyond mere depiction.
