Tamil Nadu Theatres Reclaim Early Morning Shows

Tamil Nadu's cinema halls have received a significant boost with the government now permitting up to six shows per day during a new movie's opening week. This change, effective from 6:00 am to 2:30 am, offers relief to theatre owners who previously faced numerous administrative hurdles.

The previous regulations limited theatres to four shows daily. While a fifth show was occasionally allowed, it required tedious special permissions. The revised rules, following discussions between industry stakeholders and state ministers, now officially sanction more screenings on opening weeks, weekends, and holidays.

This decision reverses a ban implemented in 2023, which was enacted after a fan's death during a movie release celebration. Despite the return of early screenings, concerns remain regarding crowd management and safety. The industry also continues to advocate for an increase in the ticket price cap.

Exhibitors are urging the government to allow ticket prices between ₹250 and ₹350, up from the current ₹180 cap, to ensure commercial viability. Monthly meetings are planned to continue dialogue with the government on these pressing financial issues.
