T.I.'s 2006 Reign: King Album & ATL Movie

Twenty years ago, in 2006, T.I. experienced a defining period in his career. His album "King" was released on March 28, 2006, and immediately topped the Billboard 200 with 522,000 first-week units sold. The album featured the Grammy-winning single "What You Know," which peaked at number three.

Simultaneously, T.I. made his feature film debut in "ATL," a coming-of-age comedy-drama set and filmed in Atlanta. The movie not only showcased the city's culture but also introduced actress Lauren London to a wider audience. T.I. spoke highly of London's dedication on set.

T.I.'s cultural dominance continued with a prominent feature on Justin Timberlake's "My Love." This collaboration, produced by Timbaland, became T.I.'s first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100, holding the top spot for three weeks in November 2006.

Reflecting on this period, T.I. noted the album "King" was named after his son, not solely his "King of the South" moniker. He also discussed leaving his past life behind to focus on his music career, a decision made before his first album.

His success extended to receiving two Grammy Awards the following year, though the specific categories were not detailed. T.I. also shared reflections on the tragic loss of his close friend, Philant Johnson, later in 2006, and how he supported Johnson's daughter through college.

Looking ahead, T.I. sees a throughline between "King" and his anticipated final album, "Kill the King," both characterized by self-affirmations, while maintaining humility and acknowledging God as the source of his blessings.
