Dog named Messi? Director reveals real reason

The Labrador in the Malayalam film 'Thudakkam,' portraying Meenu's pet, shares its name with football superstar Lionel Messi, sparking curiosity among fans. Director Jude Anthany Joseph clarified that the dog's name was not a deliberate tribute. He explained during an interview that the animal, whose script name was Harry, only responded to Messi. Consequently, the crew decided to use the name the dog recognized.

Joseph further detailed the practicalities of working with an animal actor, noting that unlike human performers, dogs cannot be given detailed scene instructions. Filmmakers had to adapt to the Labrador's natural reactions, sometimes waiting for opportune moments. He also addressed the potential discomfort some might feel about naming a dog after a famous athlete, viewing it instead as an expression of admiration.

The film also includes a Liverpool logo, which the director stated is linked to a character's identity as a fan. Joseph emphasized that these references are character-specific and not intended to cause offense to any fanbase.

Meanwhile, 'Thudakkam' has demonstrated steady box office performance. On Tuesday, the movie earned an estimated Rs 1.61 crore in net collection in India, slightly exceeding Monday's Rs 1.60 crore. With 1,136 shows nationwide on its fifth day, the film's total India net collection has reached Rs 13.61 crore. The India gross stands at Rs 15.79 crore, supplemented by an overseas gross of approximately Rs 12.90 crore, bringing the worldwide gross to Rs 28.69 crore.
