Hamilton Director Kail Tackles Live-Action Moana

Thomas Kail, acclaimed for directing "Hamilton," has made his feature film directorial debut with Disney's live-action remake of "Moana." Kail was approached about the project in late 2022 and began working on it intensely after a March 2023 meeting with producer Dwayne Johnson.

He cited recurring themes in his work, such as "Who am I?", leadership, and legacy, as key motivators for taking on the film. Kail also expressed his deep affection for musical storytelling and "Moana's" ability to connect audiences to past emotions.

Filming for "Moana" commenced in July 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia, and concluded in Hawaii in November 2024. Despite similarities to the original, Kail noted the inclusion of new scenes and altered arrangements, emphasizing a commitment to celebrating Polynesian culture and achieving emotional depth.

Kail highlighted Disney's consistent support for musicals, even during periods when they were less popular. He aimed to integrate the music and voices of Polynesia into the film's opening, connecting his childhood and present work.

The production involved 2,944 individuals, a number Kail finds deeply meaningful as it represents employment and contribution. He expressed pride in sharing the completed film with audiences, reflecting on his journey from basement theater productions to large-scale movie-making.
