The annual Tharu Festival, a five-day celebration, commenced on Mahashivratri eve in Harnatand, West Champaran. This event is dedicated to preserving and promoting the Tharu community's cultural heritage, traditions, folk arts, and handicrafts.
Formerly known as the Bhujahawa Mela, the festival has been held for over seven decades. In 1996, it was renamed the Tharu Festival to provide wider recognition. Organised on the High School premises at Harnatand, the fair has attracted visitors from numerous surrounding villages.
The festival opened with traditional rituals, followed by captivating performances of Tharu folk dances like Jhumta and Jhumar. Tribal women are showcasing handmade products at various stalls, drawing significant attention. Committees have been established to ensure the smooth conduct of the event, overseeing security, cleanliness, and cultural programmes.
