In the narrative feature category, the Iraqi drama "The President's Cake" emerged victorious, earning a $2,500 cash prize and a film production package worth $92,500. The film follows a young Iraqi girl who is tasked with baking a celebratory dessert for Saddam Hussein's birthday, shedding light on the realities of life under a dictatorship.
The documentary program also saw a standout winner, with "To The West, In Zapata" taking the best documentary feature award. The film, directed by David Bim, offers a heartbreaking look at the struggles faced by everyday Cubans during the pandemic, earning a $2,500 cash prize and a $50,000 production package.
The festival's shorts program also recognized excellence, with Rein Maychaelson's "Sammi, Who Can Detach His Body Parts" winning best narrative short and "Correct Me If I'm Wrong" taking the best documentary short award. Both winners received $1,000 in cash and an Academy Awards qualification.
