Summary
- Ted Lasso creators considered a final appearance for actor Anthony Head.
- Anthony Head, who died aged 72, was honored with an 'In Memoriam' card.
- The show's future involvement of Rupert Mannion remains uncertain.
Ted Lasso's co-creator Brendan Hunt revealed that the show's team had initially hoped to include a final appearance by actor Anthony Head in the Season 4 finale. Head, who portrayed Rupert Mannion and passed away at the age of 72 from pneumonia complications, was posthumously honored with an "In Memoriam" card in Episode 409.
Due to Head's declining health prior to his death, the planned appearance in the Season 4 finale, which Hunt co-wrote with Jason Sudeikis, could not be realized. "We were told that that was not going to be possible," Hunt stated, indicating a specific idea for a small segment was abandoned.
Annette Badland, who played Mae, expressed her surprise at Head's passing, noting she had assumed he would be present for the final season, unaware of the extent of his illness. "I assumed he would be in this last [season], and didn't know, as I think very few people knew, he was ill and just couldn't do it," she commented.
The character of Rupert Mannion was a key figure in a Season 4 plotline where his ex-wife Rebecca, played by Hannah Waddingham, suspected him of secretly buying AFC Richmond shares. However, by the season's end, it was revealed that the true culprit was Zelda, portrayed by Tracey Ullman. Head would likely have participated in the finale's significant shareholders meeting scene.
With Season 4 having completed production before Head's death, the creators face a decision regarding the fate of the Rupert Mannion character should the show be renewed for a fifth season. "I don't know," Hunt responded when asked if Rupert would be killed off in Season 5, a common television tradition. "He didn't pass until after we shot everything, so we'll have to figure that out when and if we get the chance to reconvene."
