The Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) Group is intensifying its efforts to establish Japanese content on the global stage, inspired by the international success of Korean media. Executives emphasized a mission to foster worldwide love for Japan through its programming.
Strategic global partnerships are central to this initiative. These include an equity investment in Legendary Entertainment and a joint venture, Studio Monowa, with South Korea's CJ ENM and Japan's U-Next. These collaborations aim to adapt Japanese intellectual property, such as manga and anime, into live-action formats for international markets.
Popular entertainment formats like "Sasuke: Ninja Warrior" serve as a template for global expansion. With local adaptations in 25 countries, including NBC's "American Ninja Warrior," the show's format is inspiring new IP such as "Kasso." TBS is also developing street culture IP and aims for its studio, The Seven, to create globally popular content, with ambitions extending to markets in Africa.
TBS is also exploring a 360-degree brand experience for its properties, encompassing merchandise, licensing, and physical indoor parks. The group is strengthening its international presence with overseas bases in Los Angeles and New York, and plans for European expansion to bolster sales efforts. The ultimate goal is to export Japanese intellectual property as globally recognized brands.
