In a weekend showdown at the box office, Taylor Swift's Official Release Party of a Showgirl emerged victorious, easily outpacing Dwayne Johnson's The Smashing Machine.
The three-day event, timed to the release of Swift's 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, earned a remarkable $33 million from Friday, October 3 (the album's release date) through Sunday, October 5. The theatrical experience, which played at all 540 AMC Theatres locations as well as other major chains, included the premiere of the music video for Swift's single "The Fate of Ophelia," behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot, lyric videos for additional album tracks, and "never-before-seen personal reflections" from the 35-year-old singer about her new songs.
Meanwhile, The Smashing Machine, starring Johnson as mixed martial arts legend Mark Kerr, received a 15-minute standing ovation following its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival last month. The 53-year-old actor, who has primarily taken on action roles in the past, confessed to feeling "nerves" about tackling a more dramatic part, admitting that such roles may not have been offered to him previously "because I was too scared to explore this stuff."
