A Las Vegas-based performer and columnist, Maren Wade, has initiated legal action against global music sensation Taylor Swift, asserting trademark infringement. The lawsuit centers on Swift's recent album, "The Life of a Showgirl," and its associated branding.
Wade's legal claim, filed in U.S. District Court, argues that Swift's album title and marketing significantly overlap with her own trademarked brand, "Confessions of a Showgirl." This brand, established in 2014 and trademarked since 2015, encompasses a newspaper column, podcast, and live cabaret show.
The complaint highlights that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office reportedly flagged "The Life of a Showgirl" as potentially confusingly similar to Wade's existing mark. Wade's legal team contends that Swift proceeded with the branding despite this notification.
Wade's lawsuit seeks to prohibit Swift and her associated companies, TAS Rights Management and Bravado, from using "The Life of a Showgirl" on any products or services. Additionally, Wade is demanding that all profits generated from this branding be transferred to her. She has also requested a jury trial and further monetary compensation.
Despite the legal dispute, Wade had previously expressed support for Swift's album on social media. Her legal representatives emphasize that the case is about protecting creators' work, regardless of their scale, within the framework of trademark law.
