Exiled Author Returns to Kolkata After 20 Years

Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen is anticipated to return to Kolkata on August 1, marking her first visit in nearly twenty years. Nasreen, who lived in Kolkata between 2004 and 2007, was compelled to leave due to violent protests against her writings. She has resided in Delhi since then. Her upcoming trip is at the invitation of three organizations and will feature participation in an event focused on the fight against fundamentalism.

Nasreen's return has reignited interest in the film 'Nirbashito' (Banished), directed by Churni Ganguly, which draws inspiration from her life. The film, depicting an unnamed woman and her cat, explores themes of exile and identity. Producers view the film's re-release as a celebration of resilience and freedom of expression, hoping a new audience will discover its relevance.

Director Churni Ganguly expressed her joy regarding Nasreen's potential return, emphasizing the author's long-held desire to be welcomed back to Kolkata. Ganguly noted that while Nasreen's permanent return should be her choice, Kolkata should offer her the opportunity. The film's re-release, coinciding with Nasreen's potential homecoming, holds significant emotional weight for Ganguly, symbolizing a full circle if Nasreen can return with dignity.
