Taarak Mehta Producer Asit Modi Reflects on 17 Years of Success and Future Plans

In 2025, the iconic Indian sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC) celebrates its 17th year on air. Producer Asit Kumarr Modi, the creator of the show, reflects on the challenges of staying relevant in an evolving entertainment landscape.

Modi acknowledges that while television remains successful, the rise of social media and OTT platforms has increased competition for audience attention. "We constantly have to think of new ideas to keep the audience engaged," he says. Despite the show's longevity, Modi has never taken a single leap, focusing instead on portraying the everyday lives of Gokuldham Society's residents.

The producer recalls how the idea for TMKOC took shape when he wanted to create India's first daily comedy, as a counterpoint to the then-popular daily drama Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Over the years, the show has evolved into one of Indian television's most beloved family programs, with Modi emphasizing that it is about the community, not just the characters.

While the show has faced its share of controversies and cast exits, Modi maintains a positive and disciplined approach. "Actors have worked for years and given their best. I've never asked anyone to leave," he says, noting that some have even requested to return. Looking ahead, Modi is planning a new show, exploring ideas for OTT platforms and even considering a film project, though he remains committed to the legacy of TMKOC.
