SZA, Lee Duo to Chair Ailey's Gala Honoring Luther Vandross

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's 2026-27 season will commence with its Opening Night Gala on December 2nd, chaired by Grammy winner SZA and filmmakers Tonya Lee and Spike Lee. The five-week holiday engagement will be held at New York City Center, concluding on January 3, 2027.

A significant element of the gala will be the one-night-only world premiere of "Power of Love." This performance is a tribute to the iconic Luther Vandross and is choreographed by Jamar Roberts. It is presented in collaboration with Primary Wave Music and The Luther Vandross Estate.

The "Power of Love" premiere follows Luther Vandross' induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on November 14th in Los Angeles. The tribute will feature several of his renowned hits, including "Never Too Much" and "Dance With My Father." The production was developed by Vandross' longtime collaborators Marcus Miller and Ron Gilyard, along with writer/director Reginald Hudlin.

Additionally, the gala will showcase an excerpt from Judith Jamison's "Hymn," an Emmy Award-winning tribute to Alvin Ailey. The honorary committee for the event includes notable figures such as Cynthia Erivo, LL Cool J, and Gayle King. Proceeds from the gala will support the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation's initiatives, including student scholarships and new artistic works.
