Summary

- The film world premiered at this year's Berlinale Panorama section.
- It marks Syria's first Oscar candidate since the fall of the Assad regime.

Syria has selected Tawfik Sabouni's documentary "The Other Side of the Sun" as its official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Academy Awards. This marks a significant moment, being Syria's first Oscar candidate since the collapse of Bashar Assad's regime in December 2024. The film, which had its world premiere in the Berlinale's Panorama section, delves into the immediate aftermath of the regime's fall.
Director Sabouni returns to Damascus to meet four fellow survivors of the notorious Saidnaya prison. Through reenactments conducted within the prison itself, "The Other Side of the Sun" transforms memory into testimony, highlighting the enduring human will to survive. This selection was announced by Syria's General Organization for Cinema and is the first by a newly formed committee accredited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, signaling a new era for Syrian cinema on the global stage.
Andana Films, handling worldwide sales, also announced that Icarus Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights for the documentary. "The Other Side of the Sun" has previously garnered recognition, including awards at the Amman International Film Festival in Jordan, after its well-received Berlinale debut. The shortlist for Oscar nominations is expected on December 15, with the final nominations announced on January 21, leading up to the 99th Academy Awards ceremony on March 14 in Los Angeles.
