Summary
- Syd's new album 'Beard' marks her first truly personal musical expression.
- She struggled with depression and feeling isolated during her Odd Future years.
- Buying a house in her childhood neighborhood brought Syd contentment.

Singer-rapper-producer Syd Bennett, formerly of Odd Future and The Internet, has released her new solo album, 'Beard.' She describes it as her "first really me album," emphasizing her focus on self-expression and her own production, a significant shift from earlier works like 'Fin' and 'Broken Hearts Club.'
Bennett's journey has been marked by struggles, including depression during her Odd Future days where she felt misunderstood and isolated. She found support in Matt Martians, a bandmate from The Internet, but found the group's touring environment challenging due to a perceived lack of empathy.
Having bought a house on the same street she grew up on in Mid-City, Los Angeles, Syd now feels a deep sense of contentment and accomplishment. She no longer seeks external awards, finding joy in her creative output and financial independence, with her royalties covering her mortgage.
Bennett also collaborated with R&B veteran Raphael Saadiq on 'Beard' and is simultaneously working on the next album for The Internet, intentionally aiming for a distinct sonic identity from her solo work to avoid conflation.
