Sydney Sweeney will produce and star in "The Custom of the Country," a feature film adaptation of Edith Wharton's acclaimed 1913 novel. Directed by Josie Rourke from her own script, the movie will feature Sweeney as Undine Spragg, a determined Midwestern woman aspiring to ascend New York City's social hierarchy at the turn of the 20th century.
Principal photography is anticipated to commence shortly as the ensemble cast is being finalized. StudioCanal is fully financing the project and will handle theatrical releases in its territories, alongside international sales at EFM. This marks a collaboration following StudioCanal's distribution success of Sweeney's recent film, "The Housemaid."
Director Josie Rourke described Wharton's character as "the original dangerous woman," expressing excitement for Sweeney to embody the role. Charles Finch, a producer on the film, highlighted his long-held desire to bring the novel to the screen and praised Sweeney's anticipated contribution. StudioCanal CEO Anna Marsh affirmed the company's commitment to distinctive storytelling with this cinematic endeavor.
