Swiss Docs Shine at Visions du Réel Festival

Swiss cinema is making a significant mark at the Visions du Réel festival in Switzerland, with three homegrown titles selected for the international competition. Jacqueline Zünd's "Heat," Elsa Amiel's "Dentro," and Emma Boccanfuso's "Saudades Eternas" are competing alongside international productions, demonstrating the global reach of Swiss nonfiction. Matthias Joulaud and Lucien Roux's "The Echo of the Herd" also screens in the formally adventurous Burning Lights section.

Across the festival, 26 Swiss productions and co-productions are featured. This strong presence is supported by new initiatives like the Migros Culture Percentage Story Lab. Given Switzerland's limited domestic market, international co-productions are a strategic norm for filmmakers, often supported by federal public funding. The Swiss Films Previews section offers a glimpse into upcoming documentaries, including four first films, reflecting the nation's linguistic diversity. These films often develop through public funding and international co-production before premiering at festivals. Projects like Frank Matter's "Journey to the End of the Night" and Céline Carridroit and Aline Suter's "Summer Drift" are among those presented, aiming for international circulation rather than just domestic box office success.

Recent years have seen a consistent strong presence of Swiss films at Visions du Réel, with national filmmakers winning the festival's top prize in both 2023 and 2024. This year's lineup continues this trend, with the festival serving as a vital launchpad for films destined for the wider international festival circuit.
