The Swedish series "Summer of 1985," based on John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel, is set to compete at Canneseries. Its production banner, Media Res International, has secured an option for a potential sequel based on Lindqvist's upcoming book, "Summer of 1986." Both narratives unfold in the Stockholm Archipelago during seemingly peaceful summer holidays, exploring themes of friendship and courage through young characters.
"Summer of 1985," set during the "Summer of Live Aid," follows seven teenagers who encounter a drowned boy and a mermaid, leading to perilous challenges. The sequel, "Summer of 1986," termed the "Chernobyl summer," focuses on two younger female characters. The production emphasized practical effects for the mermaid, creating a creature described as "more fish than human."
Filming for "Summer of 1985" commenced on May 20, 2025, and concluded after approximately 70 days. The series, ordered by SVT and co-produced by ZDF Neo and Film Stockholm, will be available on SVT Play in July. The creative team drew inspiration from films like "Stand by Me" and the HBO show "Sharp Objects."
